USC university of southern california
#1 USC
This team is simply loaded and motivated after finally coming off their suspension and bowl ban. It would be very difficult to find another starting 22 that is as talented as this Pac 12 powerhouse. With Barkley returning as QB, he has the opportunity to double as National Champion and Heisman winner so long as his two main targets, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee stay healthy.  The addition of Silas Redd (admittedly, a bit of an over-hyped story) should help strengthen the Trojan backfield.
The main Trojan weakness is depth.  With their scholarship reduction, USC needs to be careful, especially with their Offensive line – there just isn’t much room for error there.
Another area for concern is on the defensive side with Devon Kennard’s torn pectoral muscle – his replacement is likely to be a redshirt freshman for most of the first half of the season.  All in all, this season’s road to the National Championship will run through So. Cal.

Alabama Crimson Tide
#2 Alabama
These are more of a 2a and 2b placing, as Alabama and LSU’s strength are virtually equal.  With that said, Alabama’s performance in last season’s title game and the return of AJ McCarron is why I give them the edge here.  The Crimson Tide’s strong defense is back, and although they won’t be quite a strong as last year, the return of guys like Jesse Williams, Nico Johnson and Robert Lester make this team formidable.
Offensively, McCarron should have another nice season as his main target will likely be 4th year WR starter Marquis Maze. In addition, keep on eye out for RB Eddie Lacy – this could be a breakout season for him.

Louisiana State University
#3 LSU
LSU has a few questions to answer coming in to this season, most notably, how to fill the hole that Tyrann Mathieu leaves behind after his dismissal, and how new QB Zach Mettenberger will fare.  If these two questions are answered quickly and favorably, the Tigers will regain their Southeastern Conference dominance and contend for another national title.  Look for Mettenberger to target WRs Beckham, Landry and Wright while the Tiger’s running attack should be led by the tandem of Alfred Blue and Kenny Hilliard.
Defensively, LSU’s armor chink may be in their secondary as Simon is the only cornerback with game experience and Reid at free safety is the best overall secondary player.  However, their line should be very solid with Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo leading the way.
